A photographer in Brazil captured the emotional images of two-month-old conjoined twin girls before and after their surgical separation operation. The twin infants, Maria Clara and Maria Eduarda Santana, from Salvador, were born in May 2015 sharing an abdomen and liver.

In August, photographer Mateus André snapped pictures of the babies lying peacefully in their crib, batting gently at each other and interacting with both their parents ahead of their surgery.
The photographer continued to follow the family’s story and returned last week to capture the infant’s remarkable recovery after the grueling live-saving operation that required the help of 15 medical professionals.
